What’s On at the Cinema this April: From Kung-Fu Panda to Back To Black (2024)

So, whether you want to choose between watching Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire, starring Paul Rudd and McKenna Grace; or comedy icon Jack Black return to his role as Po in King Fu Panda 4, or even Marisa Abela star as music legend Amy Winehouse in new biopic Back To Black, customers can get access to the latest and greatest entertainment without spending an extra penny.

Kung-Fu Panda 4

Release date: March 28th

School of Rock and The Holiday funny man Jack Black returns as Po as he is tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

But he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, while a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.

The cast includes Awkwafina, Viola David, Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston and Mr. Beast.

Monkey Man

Release Date: April 5th

Produced by Jordan Peele and the directorial debut of Dev Patel (Hotel Mumbai). Monkey Man is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, the Hindu God of wisdom, courage and devotion.

“Kid is an anonymous young man who makes a meagre living in an underground fight club where, every night, he is beaten bloody for cash while wearing a gorilla mask.

“After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash a campaign of retribution to settle the score with those who took everything from him.”

The First Omen

Release Date: April 5th

The latest in The Omen franchise, “The First Omen follows a young American woman sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church.

“But soon she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”

Cast includes Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Ralph Ineson (Game Of Thrones), Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones) and Bill Nighy (Love Actually).

Seize Them!

Release Date: April 5th

“Brimming with warmth, humour and swordfights, Seize Them! is a comedy road trip set in the dark ages. The egotistical and clueless Queen Dagan has been toppled from her throne, and she’ll need help to survive as a fugitive and win back her kingdom.

“With her new friends, a castle worker and a s**t shoveler, she begins her quest for justice.” Cast includes Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood, Ghosts’ Lolly Adefope, Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan and Hot Fuzz’s Nick Frost.

Civil War

Release Date: April 12th

“An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor's edge.” Details have been deliberately kept scarce by A24, who were behind Oscar-smash Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022.

Cast includes: Nick Offerman (The Last Of Us), Kirsten Dunst (The Virgin Suicides, Bring It On), Wagner Moura (Shining Girls, Mr and Mrs Smith), Jefferson White (Yellowstone, Blindspot), Nelson Lee (Mulan, Ashoka, Stargirl), and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla).

Arcadian

Release Date: April 12th

Nicolas Cage (National Treasure, Face/Off) stars as Paul, who is living in a post-apocalyptic world with his twin teenage sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell, IT) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins, Lost In Space). While they’ve managed to get by in this strange new world, they live in constant fear. So when the worst happens and they find themselves in imminent danger, the trio must execute a desperate plan to survive.

Back To Black

Release Date: April 12th

Marisa Abela (Industry, COBRA) stars as Amy Winehouse in this dramatic retelling of the star’s life. The movie follows Amy’s rise to fame, the creation of her iconic albums Frank and Back To Black, and her tragic descent into addiction that would take her life by age 27.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy), Back To Black stars Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan, The Gentlemen), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken, Lady Chatterly’s Lover) and Leslie Manville (Phantom Thread, The Crown).

Abigail

Release Date: April 19th

“A group of wannabe criminals bite off more than they can chew when they kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, in the hopes of demanding a $50million ransom. “However, while keeping an eye on her in an isolated mansion, they soon discover that Abigail is no normal little girl, and they may not survive the night.”

From Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directive minds behind Ready or Not and Scream V, Abigail stars Melissa Barrera (Scream V and VI, In the Heights), Dan Stevens (The Guest, Legion), Kathryn Newton (Lisa Frankenstein, Freaky), William Catlett (Black Lightning, True Story), Kevin Durand (Resident Evil: Retribution, Locke And Key), Angus Cloud (Euphoria) and Alisha Weir (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical).

Hitpig

Release Date: April 19th

Hitpig follows a piggy bounty hunter who finds himself taking on the job of a lifetime when he’s tasked with taking out Pickles, an elephant who has escaped the clutches of an evil trillionaire. However, the unlikely pair soon find themselves on a road trip across America.

An all-star cast voices the film, including RuPaul, Rainn Wilson (The Office), Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones), Lilly Singh, and Flavour Flav.

The American Society of Magical Negroes

Release Date: April 26th

The American Society of Magical Negroes follows Aren, a young man recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to one cause: making white people’s lives easier.However, when Aren meets Lizzie, Aren starts second-guessing whether he wants to be in a world where he has to sacrifice his own happiness for ‘the cause’.

The film is led by Justice Smith (Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves).

Challengers

Release Date: April 26th

Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, We Are Who We Are), Challengers is the highly anticipated him starring Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Euphoria), Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) and Mike Faist (West Side Story, The Bikeriders) as a complicated love triangle gone wrong.

Challengers crosses two time periods: the past and the present.

Tashi (Zendaya) is a former world class tennis player turned coach, who now lives vicariously through her husband, who’s turned from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. However, when he falls into a losing streak, Tashi tries to shake him out of it by playing a challenger tournament - which should be a set of easy wins. But tensions soon rise when he finds himself standing across the net from Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend.

Boy Kills World

Release Date: April 26th

“Boy, a deaf person with a vibrant imagination, is trained by a mysterious shaman to become an instrument of death after his family is murdered.”

Bill Skarsgard (IT, Barbarian) stars as boy, with a supporting cast including Famke Janssen (X-Men: The Last Stand, GoldenEye), Michelle Dockery (Downtown Abbey, The Gentlemen), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day, Utopia) and Brett Gelman (Fleabag, Stranger Things).

Ordinary Angels

Release Date: April 26th

A faith-based drama based on a true story, Ordinary Angels follows a hairdresser, Sharon, in 1994 Kentucky, who mobilises her local community in the name of good.

After the North American Cold Wave of the year - which in reality claimed more than 100 lives - Sharon inspires others to help the critically ill daughter of a widowed father.

Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby, The Good Mother) leads the cast, joined by Alan Ritchson (Fast X, Reacher), Nancy Travis (Last Man Standing, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants) and Tamala Jones (What Men Want, Rebel).
