Learn how to make delicious vegan style white hot chocolate within a matter of minutes using raw cocoa butter, cashew nuts, almond milk, vanilla and nutmeg.

I'm so excited to share this white hot chocolate recipe with you all.

It's a recipe that can be made within a matter of minutes (well 15 maximum) and one that will take you through the entire course of the colder months with a smile on your face.

This is nothing but creamy, delicious, luxury white hot chocolate in one serving.

When most people talk about "hot chocolate" they immediately think of the dark hue. Granted I am partial to the former type of hot beverage.

If you've navigated my website you will see that I am slowly building up a nifty collection of hot beverages to choose from.

You can pick a different one, depending on the day or what your mood is.

White hot chocolate vs hot chocolate

Both drinks are amazing and unique in taste and texture.

However, many people do not regard white hot chocolate as chocolate, while others do.

There appears to be a divide in whether or not white hot chocolate should be regarded as true chocolate.

White hot chocolate tends to be a lot creamier, smoother and significantly sweeter than it's darker counterpart.

For some, this can be quite a sickly sweet type of taste and one that is acquired.

White hot chocolate is made from cacao/cocoa butter (which comes from coco beans), milk (or cream solids), sugar and additional flavouring such as vanilla.

On the other hand, hot chocolate is made from good quality chocolate that is melted with either hot water, milk and/or cream.

Since the chocolate already contains sugar, you generally don't need to add very much, if at all.

Hot cacao is made from cacao powder, hot water/milk, sugar, vanilla and sometimes spices are used.

Both hot chocolate and hot cacao have a much higher percentage of cocoa butter compared to white chocolate which yields a more intense chocolate flavour.

Reasons to make this drink

Sometimes it's nice to switch things up from what is considered the norm.

Dark hot chocolate (albeit vegan/dairy free) is wonderful but this white hot chocolate recipe really takes things up a notch.

  • It's dairy free and vegan friendly
  • Takes less than 15 minutes to make
  • Taste delicious
  • Suitable for kids and grown ups alike
  • Very simple to make
  • Can be doubled/tripled in quantity
  • You can add cream and marshmallows on top

Recipe Preparation

The recipe is very simple and easy to pull together. In order to make this drink dairy free/vegan, you will need some cocoa butter.

Raw cocoa is vegetable fat extracted from the coco bean to make chocolate.

You can't make white chocolate without it, it's very important you purchase some so you can move on to the next step.

If you can not sure where to buy raw cocoa butter, you can get via Amazon

Now we have touched on the important ingredients, let's discuss the method.

The steps

  • Combine the cashew nuts and almond milk into a blender and blitz into a smooth consistency.
  • On medium heat, add the almond milk to a medium sized saucepan and heat through for about 2 minutes.
  • Once heated, reduce the heat to medium-low, add the cacao butter and stir to melt.
  • Once melted, add the rest of the ingredients.
  • Continue to whisk for another 2-3 minutes.
  • To create froth, run the hot chocolate through the blender for 30 seconds (this is an optional step).
  • Serve with vegan whipped cream and vegan marshmallows.

Notes and tips

  • I highly recommend using cashew nuts or adding a creamy cashew nut butter instead. This helps to balance out the taste of the hot chocolate.
  • You can use cacao butter or the cacao butter that looks like buttons. Either one is fine and will work.
  • Don't be tempted to boil the milk, you don't want to scold or burn the milk.
  • Chop the cacao into small-ish pieces as this will make it melt much quicker in the saucepan.
  • Any leftovers can be store in the refrigerator and re-heat in a saucepan or microwave for a few minutes.
  • If you want a frothy topping, be sure to transfer the white hot chocolate into the blender once it is heated through prior to serving.
