The naming of racehorses can be a fun game and an esoteric exercise that peeks deep into pedigrees and wordplay for inspiration. Take for example, Sierra Leone. One of his owners, Peter Brant, nodded to his sire, Gun Runner, because the African nation is known as a center of arms dealing.
West Paces Racing, named for a road in Atlanta, was founded by Larry Connolly and Keith Mason. They happen to own Dornoch, another Derby horse, named after Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Dornoch, Scotland, where presumably, the owners have enjoyed a round or two.

Toronto treads lightly, choosing 4th-place Minnesota over 3rd-place Boston as PWHL playoff opponent
- By JOHN WAWROW - AP Hockey Writer
Having the option of choosing their playoff opponent wasn’t taken lightly by the staff and players of the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Toronto franchise for clinching first-place in the standings. So sensitive and in-depth were the discussions, coach Troy Ryan knew better than to disclose the reasons behind Toronto’s decision to face fourth-place Minnesota over third-place Boston. The two teams who finished with identical 12-9-3 records, with Boston having the tie-breaking edge. Of all the aspects taken into consideration, among the most important, perhaps, was the fear of providing their opponent any additional motivation entering the best-of-five semifinal series, which opens in Toronto on Wednesday. Montreal faces Boston in the other semifinal starting on Thursday.

Two WNBA players among a dozen Americans who played in Russia following Brittney Griner's arrest
- By DOUG FEINBERG - AP Basketball Writer
Two WNBA players were among a dozen Americans who opted to play in Russia this past offseason following Brittney Griner’s incarceration in 2022. Forwards Kayla Thornton, a member of the New York Liberty, and the Los Angeles Sparks' Monique Billings played for Dynamo Kursk. There were other former WNBA players in the league included Megan Walker and Bria Holmes. Many WNBA players opt to play in international leagues during the offseason to supplement their league salaries. Russia was one of the highest paying leagues and the favored destination for top players like Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Griner. It’s lost its favored status because of Griner’s arrest and 10 month imprisonment as well as Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine.

From Marseille to Mont-Blanc: What to know about the journey of the Olympic torch to Paris
- By JEROME PUGMIRE - AP Sports Writer
The Olympic torch will finally enter France. It's due to reach the southern seaport of Marseille on Wednesday and already, it has been quite a journey. After being lit by the sun’s rays on April 16 in Ancient Olympia, it was carried around Greece before leaving Athens late last month aboard a three-mast ship named Belem, headed for Marseille. Once it leaves Marseille, a vast relay route will be undertaken before the torch's odyssey ends on July 27 in Paris. Some notable stops include the stunning island of Mont-Saint-Michel. There's a jaunt through France’s overseas territories and a sweep up the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc mountain pass.
