The Nisenfeld Family
Enjoy!
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Pearls and Pirates where the plank you walk tonight leads you into
the warmth and camaraderie of the members of the Banner community, rather
than the cold waters of the deep blue sea.
Our voyage on the Jolly Bobcat will be a far distance away, both in time and
experience, from that of the pirates of yesteryear. Avast - there will be netting,
replicas of ship masts, pieces of pirate garb, and treasure maps reminiscent of the
days of Captain Hook and Jean Lafitte. But unlike the pirates for whom each
voyage focused on the search for treasure, we will need no map or skullduggery to
lead us to that which we hold most dear. Our treasure is not made of gold or silver
coins or the jewels of kings and queens, but rather lies in the wonder, curiosity and
spirit of the students who grace our classrooms. Each of these students is a
treasure in and of themselves, and the inner glow and magical beauty of each is as
rare as the rarest of pearls.
Our quest for Pearls and Pirates is that which has been at the heart of each of
the past 29 auctions - to secure the means by which to enhance the learning
experience for our students today so that they may “share the secrets knowledge
brings as to us it unfolds.” Their journey at Banner is but the beginning of the
journey of a lifetime of learning.
We extend our deepest thanks to each of you for joining us on this voyage. There is
no doubt that Banner’s treasure derives also from our families, faculty and staff
whose generosity, dedication and service help hoist the sails each day for the
School. Tonight, “the green and gold, the Banner Bold” flies over the Jolly Bobcat
thanks to your faith and commitment to the enrichment and future of the School.
Batten down the hatches, Mateys! We are off to an evening of magnificent cuisine
to be enjoyed in the company of the finest of shipmates and a round of lively and
competitive bidding!
A sense of pride fills us inside,
We love our Banner School,
We love our Banner School.
My thanks to all,
Gail A. Dobay

905. Barbie® Inspiring Women™ Series Katherine Johnson
Doll
Barbie® recognizes all female role models. The Inspiring
Women™ Series pays tribute to incredible heroines of their
time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules, and
paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than
ever before. While growing up in White Sulphur Springs,
West Virginia, Katherine Johnson displayed an intense curi-
osity and an extraordinary brilliance with words and numbers
alike. As a child prodigy, she entered high school at 10 years
old and graduated summa cum laude from college when she
was just eighteen with two Bachelor of Science degrees in
mathematics and French. In the mid-1950s, she joined a pool
of African-American women hired by NASA to work as hu-
man computers. Katherine calculated the trajectory of
NASA's first American-manned flight into space. Her flaw-
less calculations helped ensure that the Apollo astronauts
landed and returned safely from their voyage to the moon.
Her figures were so consistently accurate, that when NASA
switched to computers, they had Katherine double-check the
accuracy of the results. The Barbie® Inspiring
Women™ Katherine; Johnson doll celebrates the achieve-
ments of a pioneer who broke through barriers of race and
gender. Like the trajectories she calculated, Katherine's
contributions inspire young people to excel in math and sci-
ence, and to reach for the stars. Includes doll, doll stand
and Certificate of Authenticity. Ages 6 and up.

So begins this controversial and enlightened book by Roger
Schank, a world-renowned expert on learning who believes
that every day of the school year our children are being
failed by an academic system that does nothing to stir a
lifelong passion for learning. In this lively, sometimes alarm-
ing book, Schank shatters the myths about how children
learn and offers candid advice for parents who want to raise
kids with gumption, ambition, creativity, inquisitiveness, and
analytic and verbal proficiency--the six traits of practical
intelligence that kids need, not simply to get good grades
and citizenship awards, but to succeed in life.

What an awesome opportunity to own five books written by
Banner parent and local author Shawn K. Stout:
PENELOPE CRUMB books (series) by Shawn K. Stout
Fourth grader Penelope Crumb has a big nose and an even
bigger imagination, which gets her into trouble, especially
with her impatient teacher Ms. Stunkel. The School Library
Journal writes "Stout's series about this tween's worries,
insecurities, quirkiness, and wit deserves a space in library
collections looking for precocious, independent girl charac-
ters who might not be perfect but are something else: real-
istic." This four-book series is signed by the author and can
be personalized with a special message. (ages 7-11)
A TINY PIECE OF SKY by Shawn K. Stout
Based on a true story set in pre-World War II in Maryland,
this book tells the story of the Baums, a German-American
family who open a restaurant amidst obstacles of racism,
segregation, and pre-war fears. In this coming-of-age story,
11-year-old Frankie sees people for who they really are, de-
spite skin color or nationality. VOYA writes, "Young teens
will enjoy Frankie's spirit and humor while learning a little
bit about people and prejudice along the way." This hard-
cover book is signed by the author and can be personalized
with a special message. (ages 9-12)
