- Walk on or Drive On ?
The vast majority of visitors to Friday Harbor arrive on the big green and white WSF ferries. It’s a great boat ride through the archipelago, and depending on the ferry schedule, you may visit Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas Islands on the way here. Unless you absolutely must have a car while on San Juan Island, consider the option of walking on the ferry, instead of driving on. Not only will you save a bunch of money, but you will save a bunch of time. On busy summer days, the wait time to get on a ferry may be several hours, or more. Worst case, the ferry may be overloaded, and you may be stuck in Friday Harbor overnight, with no sleeping accommodations, and that is not good. Leave the car behind, and use our shuttle bus, rental cars, scooters, or even hitchhike.
